Can we forgive, if we can't forget?

Forgive those who sin against us as we would forgive ourselves

The concept sounds pretty simple, forgive others the same way you forgive yourself.  Of course there is a big aspect of forgiveness that we can't seem to overlook, the fact that we can't really wipe our memories clean.  Time can heal all wounds, because time allows you to fill up that space with more memories, it pushes the painful memory to the back of your mind, somewhere in the dark recesses.  But all it takes is one simple smell, thought, or familiar face, and your right back where you started down memory lane.

Do we ever really forgive ourselves for making the mistakes that we make?  Do we forgive ourselves for the wrong that we have done to others, both on purpose or by accident?  We know we are only human; not perfect therefore full of mistakes but sometimes we cannot stop reliving these mistakes. So how do you forgive yourself when you cannot forget the wrong you have done?

Pride refers to an inflated sense of one's personal status or accomplishments, often used synonymously with hubris

Pride is indeed attached to forgiveness.  If I am so full of pride that I am attached to whatever self portrayed image, whatever name I made for myself, that I feel as if no one should do me any wrong then how can I forgive others?  Show me a person full of pride, and you have shown me a an unforgiving heart.  We are all humans therefore prone to mistakes. We will all be wronged by someone; we will all wrong someone else, let go of pride and let the healing begin.
